Wonderful shot

Hi everyone,
In my first day of posting, I driven to start my posting with this page taken form a photo site.
The photo is a beautiful one but from war torn country in Africa. The color is so intriguing it should not be associated with the subject of the picture. Then, the comments of the picture are so wonderful that they sum up all what is happening in this world and how people have different perception for the one incident.

Then comes the comments comprised of wisdom, laughter and sarcastic views. It all reflects the world called the world after 2001. It shows the irony of tragic and humor.

- Amazing! And this guy doesn't even look like he got hit once. Just kidding. It is amazing how the rust spots from the bullet holes adds to the contrast in colors. Interesting photo, interesting situation.

- I had a couple of cars like that. It's from salt on the roads in the winter.
- The photo is interesting, but (for me) more so because this man has a machine gun and flip-flops.

- Interesting seems to be the word of choice. Although, I would lean towards poetic. The colors give the feeling of happiness, a place where one can relax and just enjoy... where time just floats by. However, the subject matter is gruesome. Here you have a man sitting on watch with a machine gun against a building littered with bullet holes and you can imagine that he is most likely not relaxed! lol.. And then, finally you have the vehicle which conveys the passage of time giving the photograph deeper meaning. "This is life"

- Looks like down town New Olreans on a GOOD day.
- Holy rundown bus with no wheels batman!
Someone needs to inform this guy that it’s lightning that never strikes twice in the same place, not bullets. He should maybe find a safer place to sit.

- After the Imus thing, can we still use "Ho's", because this picture just screams of a rap video I saw one time. I'm just sittin' on a box, with my Glock 9 mil.... Wonderin' why my ride ain't got not wheels... etc.....etc.....etc...
- It's obvious no one has taken the NRA gun safety course in Liberia!!

- Flip-flops, an AK-47, and a shirt from the 80s. He's ready to wage war.
- Holy Crap
- FOR SALE: Green Cheverolet Minivan: Low mileage, one owner, great ventilation...

i thought the bullet holes were butterflies on the van.
- I think it's a beautiful picture...in a sad sort of way.

- After I spray everything, I like to sit out here, poke my finger in the flash suppressor and just daydream...I wonder why no women come around here anymore?
- Just another "Holey" war!
- It's really weird, but the way the vehicle is shot up almost gives the picture a felling of motion even though everything is at a standstill.
- To me, the contrast is the death in all the bullet holes, and a man who is very much alive.
- who do you suppose paid for all the ammo?
- I'm not sure why, but the photo tends to churn my stomach. I guess I just think about the people that lived through it... and moreso those that did not. I can't believe the destruction of the van - imagine if that were filled with children.
- THIS IS VERY SAD! I DONT KNOW IF HE IS PROTECTING HIS TERRITORY OR JUST BEING A REBEL EITHER WAY THERE BOTH SAD.

- Very sad. We take alot for granted living our lifes in the USA. Most of us dont know how lucky we truly are.
- To me, it is alarming, disturbing, and just plain sad!!!
- dont there weapons have a single round selector. who is paying for the ammo?
- There are so many truths in the comments stated. The picture to me is beautiful in that it speaks of a different mind set of the people who lived there at one time. They loved color which showed their love of life and some happiness past. It shows sadness in the obvious destruction due to mans' ability to think that their thoughts or causes are the only true truth for the present situations. Ego and self righiousness is a thing to fear when it becomes out of control and radical. No one prospers, only distruction follows. People die taking with them the truth of life. As the love dies so does love and man is diminished.
- HAHAHAHA you missed you missed me now you got to kiss me.
- Not to worry about the children - they had their own guns and were returning fire from behind the bus.
- Wow!!! So this is how a "spray-of-bullets" looks like?
- (Unknown to the rest of the world) What you are really seeing is a cardboard cut out of a destroyed van. Behind the cardboard is a BMW with a sweet set of shiny rims and a boomin system.
- Okay... where's the new pictures??? It's time! LOL!
- He might have lead poisoning. Maybe that is why he is so tranquil. Interesting.
- Someone has some really bad aim. They missed that guy completely!
- Did someone forget to use primer?
- My eyes are drawn to the beautiful contrast of the lively colors against the context of violently destructive bullet holes and time eroding rust. But for a static human in the picture, this reminds me of the hidden natural beauty more appropriately found in underwater coral reefs. Whether the image is hopeful or ominous can be debated, but it is truly stunning with its beauty.
- Why is everyone focusing on the bullet holes; lets look at whats important here....What happened to the tires and rims.
- This picture was taken during a ceasefire. If only the ceasefire lasted as long as it took the rust to build on the bullet holes.
- As an American, I'm apalled at this even being displayed! How dare you ruin my day! I just want to go to the mall, text msg my friends, and sit back in my comfy recliner and watch American Idol.
- They are NOT bullet holes. Look carefully, there was an explosion inside or on the other side of the van, and the holes are from SHRAPNEL of the munition charge, whatever it was. The rear of the roof is perforated to shreds, no way it's by a machine gun. And who shoots into the sky, anyway?
- Good call, Yousef. I'm going to have to start watching C.S.I. more. I kept looking at that thinking, "bullet holes in the roof? Are they lying on their backs shooting?"
- I dont believe this is from an explosion. There would be more of a force applied to that van than just that. Those bullet holes could have ricocheted of parts of the van, building whatever to hit the roof. Do you see and parts of the van damaged by smoke?
- Excellent observation Yousef. No doubt some of the holes are from bullets, but most of them show the metal bent out showing they were made from the inside. Jane, your point is well represented.. assuming it is sarcasm.
- Looks to me like some one fired a skinni (rocket) at the van once upon a time. The skinni went through a window and by the looks of things exploded inside... most likely at the rear of the van. The majority of the holes do show signs of an explosion since the metal is bent outwards of the van. But as it has been pointed out theres bullet holes on it too. Those holes are probably from random fire fights and stray bullets in the area from that time and place, were shooters or runners used as cover... no that theres much vovere to offer, but its better than nothing I guess. The rest of the damage is just the passage of time. Good point "Jane", The many Americans would rather do as you sayd, instead of facing the reality of whats going on around most of the world. These people fail to realize freedom isnt free nor cheap. We Americans try to fight the war were they start before it reaches us home... it reached us once and everybody sayd lets go to war. Now they want it to stop sayng bush has gone overboard. Do they fail to realize that if we stop taking the war to the enemey the enemy will bring the war home? Is that what it will take for most of the our American country to realize we have been given no chice by the terrorists, but to fight or be terrorized on our own soil?
- HAH!! I think its a DYI gone wrong.! A coupla plastic flamingos, a blow up palm tree, some Ivy, sunflowers, and a commode filled with purple trailing petunias and you've got yourself and nice little 'ornamental' garden. Fix yourself some sweet tea and all is good. Put that gun down or you gonna poke your eye out young man!
- Thats his pride and joy! think fred flintstone could beat him! Happiness is a cigar called hamlet
- Of course he can have that kind of a weapon and wear flip-flops...come too close and he'll flip YOUR flop...an you'll look like a swiss outline of that truck
- sad thing is, that vehicle was once a full bodied BUS...they shot it into a little tonka truck
- Looks like he has been using his artistic ability to make a modern sculpture composition that he could sell on ebay for a cool million. Not even an idiot would dress in those bright colors if he thought he would get be a target.
- Don't wish to be posted, but would love a digital copy of this photo. Not for distribution or release. I grew up in Africa and have an affinity for conflict photos. If possible, pls email to my address. Thanks. 47- This pic reminds me of Blackhawk down. And how futile it was to attempt to help people that would devour the helpers. Like sharks in the middle of a feeding frenzy. Still found it sad for anyone trapped in the middle of a war. But the entire world’s sadness can’t be ours as well. Unless we have an interest that could profoundly affect us all!
- Liberia, the late great experiment
- Where do the flip-flops come from Where does the shirt come from and the normalacy of it all This is disgusting that we accept this to happen to others...
- The sad thing is that this guy has been fighting for the past ten years, and he's looks in his early 20's! This corner is obvously a strtegic area that must be kept and guarded - even under cease fire.
- Hmmm...someone left living after all that. American weapon manufactureres need to increase lethality of weapons. And our CIA advisors need to work on marksmanship. OK on the positive side humanity need not worry about wiping itself out by war -- we got Cockroach DNA!!!
- It is beautiful and natural. Man as animal undergoing Darwinistic reduction of excess population. War really isn't about hate though man paints that on top of all. As populations go up individual animals feel more stress -- until violence breaks out. Heck those bunnies on your lawn aren't always mating -- sometimes they driving the intruder from their territory or biting the gentials off a rival male. Man is a bit different in that stress and groups often form along the clash of ideas such as religion -- as well as clashes of race or pack territory as simple animals do. Eventually populations drop reducing stress to the individual and even the habitual fighter relaxes as fighting becomes less frequent due to open space. The picture should tell Americans to start getting ready for war at home though. US domestic stress is pretty high and imprisonment really only helps for abnormals - not when the normal population is stressed.
- Real wars can't be settled by police action at less than 1 for 10 occupation (Grenada, but Panama was a raid not a war). Otherwise atrocities must be committed for one side to win (Firebomb Dresden, A Bombs on Japan) and war to come to a close. Name an actual fighting war won without atrocities. The US can name as recent losses/stalemates (Korea, Vietnam, Ethopia, Iraq) where we tried to avoid atrocities. And allowing refugees is letting people avoid involvement in a local social decision. It also tends to export the problem to other regions for later. Allowing refugees is like allowing gangrene to spread for fear of cutting off the tip of an extremidy. From the viewpoint of a society or nation, people can be replaced -- it is called sex. Yes genocide tends to place the sanity of the comitting group into question in the eyes of the rest of the world -- but it does tend result in lasting peace. And the comitting group itself can always be eliminated by others after showing a few more signs of "inefficiency" or insanity.
- Thanks, wellduh. That explains the set of teethmarks I found on me the morning after I passed out on the front lawn.
- Much safer to observe the cease-fire than the fire!!!
-I think he got a hand-me-down car. I hate being the youngest!
- I couldn't imagine what it would be like to have to live in that kind of environment and have people make fun of it on a blog site! You have time to sit here and look at the condition that man is living in....how many will pray for him or do something to help others who are suffering.
- wellduh... huhh????..
- New Orleans on a good day...boomin system...ha ha..that's rich! Now let's see some pictures of the terrorist attacks in Europe and joke in a jolly fashion about how the rest of the world doesn't realize that, but those were actually meth lab explosions! Wouldn't that be funny! NOT.
- You should know Chris in LA... isn't this commonplace for you folks?
- Wow, aren't we lucky that we don't have to deal with those kind of things everyday... i feel bad for them.
- I'm RICK JAMES BEATCH...
